The Y-Cam HomeMonitor lets you video camera schedule recording or rely on motion detection to record events, but that’s the extent of this IP camera’s usefulness. It’s more complicated to set up than any other IP camera we tested, and it loses its connection to Wi-Fi often.
The Y-Cam HomeMonitor is an internet camera that offers free cloud storage for your recorded video, and you can view live video from the app. However, it doesn’t stand up to the best IP cameras in mini video camera video quality, features or connection quality.
In our tests, the Y-Cam HomeMonitor produced the lowest-quality video of all the IP cameras. Even during the day with plenty of light, this IP security camera didn’t show objects clearly, regardless of their proximity to the camera – and that’s just stationary objects. When the camera picked up movement, there was a 17-second delay between when the motion occurred and when it showed up on the video, which means it isn’t a reliable Wi-Fi camera to use for home security or to monitor your children.
Setting up and installing this IP camera was frustrating and difficult compared to the best wireless IP cameras. Even the camera’s stand was difficult to set up, and the camera tipped over many times.
This IP camera doesn’t have two-way audio, so you can’t talk to anyone in the room you’re monitoring, although you can hear them. Y-Cam’s manufacturer offers free cloud storage, so you don’t have to spend any extra money to access video clips. You get a one-year warranty with this IP camera, so you can return it for a replacement or repair if it’s defective. The Y-Cam support team is available by phone or email, but you must email a request to speak with a support representative by phone.
